Position & Client Overview:

Our client, a large reference laboratory located across the United States, seeks a grossing lab technician to test in their busy anatomic histology reference laboratory in the Atlanta area. This is a night shift position with rotating weekends and no call.

Salary range: $50,000-75,000

Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of a pathologist, duties may include preparation, gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens.

Skill Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Good knowledge of histologic techniques
  • Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot and maintain the equipment
  • Dexterity and good hand-eye coordination are required to collect and prepare specimens
  • Lab safety and infection prevention is of paramount importance

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures
  • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling
  • Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification
  • Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned
  • Capable of grossing moderate to high complex/complicated specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle broader range of specimens with indirect supervision (i.e., gall bladders, oriented skin lesions, etc.)
  • Escalate non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to pathologists' assistants
  • Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable
  • Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing

Education, Certification, & Experience:

  • Bachelor degree (required)
  • One (1) year prior experience as a grossing tech (required)
