Position & Client Overview:

A large reference laboratory located throughout the United States is looking for a New York licensed Pathologists' Assistant to test in their busy reference laboratory. This permanent position is an early day shift with a 2 or 3 a.m. start.

 

Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of a pathologist: Preparation, gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens.

 

Skill Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Good knowledge of histologic techniques
  • Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot and maintain the equipment
  • Dexterity and good hand-eye coordination are required to collect and prepare specimens
  • Lab safety and infection prevention is of paramount importance

 

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for histologic processing, according to policies and procedures
  • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling
  • Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification
  • Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned
  • Capable of grossing moderate to high complex/complicated specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle broader range of specimens with indirect supervision (i.e., gall bladders, oriented skin lesions, etc.)
  • Escalate non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants
  • Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable
  • Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing

 

Education, Certification, & Experience:

  • Master's or Bachelor's degree
  • New York PA license required
