Assistant Director of Cytogenetics Job

The Cytogenetics Associate Director is a Critical Member of the Cytogenetics Management Team.

The Assistant Director reports directly to the Associate Director, and will oversee a team of individuals, including operations managers, supervisors, and technicians.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director will manage personnel in terms of performance, allocation of duties, and conflict resolution. A primary responsibility of this position is to review and interpret cases ensuring the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of patient test results, bringing any potential issues to the Cytogenetics Management team for evaluation and resolution.

The Assistant Director will also be responsible for ensuring quality and efficiency of clinical microarray services, meeting the case turn-around times, proper documentation, and execution of an active and continuous quality control program in collaboration with the Quality Management personnel. Participation in education, marketing, and other position-related duties is required as necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities for Assistant Director:

Each individual performing high complexity testing must:
Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, perform instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance.

Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and must either correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor or Manager, Technical Supervisor, or Director.

Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Help to maintain a safe working environment by strict adherence to company safety policies and procedures, be alert to the existence of safety hazards and reports any unsafe conditions to the department manager.

Additional Assistant Director Responsibilities:

Assist in ensuring that patient results are only reported when the system is functioning properly and that remedial action is taken and documented when system failures occur.

Assist in ensuring that testing methodology provides quality of results required for patient care.

Assist in ensuring that adequate procedures are used to verify the accuracy, precision and other pertinent performance characteristics of methods employed.

Assist in ensuring the establishment and maintenance of acceptable levels of performance for the test system, including pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing.

Assist in ensuring that results reports include pertinent information required for interpretation.
Assist in ensuring personnel are appropriately evaluated and trained.

Assist in ensuring that consultation is available to clients relating to the quality of the reported results and their interpretation.

Be accessible to the laboratory and Cartesian Medical Staff to provide onsite, telephone or electronic consultation as needed. Conform to all company policies and procedures and maintain a business-like, professional attitude at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities include:

Provide supervision, oversight and guidance to Cytogenetic Technologists, Clinical Lab Scientists, Clinical Lab Technicians and Lab Assistants working in the CLIA and CAP certified Tissue Culture and Cytogenetics clinical laboratories.
Review and approve timecards, schedules and time off for personnel.

Perform semi-annual performance evaluations of direct reports.

Be accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established either by the laboratory director or technical supervisor.

In the absence of the director and technical supervisor, the general supervisor must be responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results.

Assist in monitoring environmental conditions of the laboratory to ensure a safe environment for employees and provide accurate testing and resulting.

Minimum requirements Education & Qualifications:
Requires an MD and/or PhD in Genetics plus ABMG certification or eligibility in Clinical Cytogenetics. Special emphasis in Cytogenetics of malignancies preferred.

Requires a minimum two (2) years of experience in the clinical laboratory, with at least 1 year of experience in directing the interpretation of Cytogenetics including chromosome analysis and FISH.

Requires a CA Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist (minimum), or CA Clinical Cytogeneticist Director level license, preferred.
