The CDC has proposed a policy for organ donation that would consider deceased and living donors who were not monogamous in the past 12 months as being at increased risk of transmitting HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. The CDC said the move is geared toward making the organ supply safer and preventing accidental transmission of infectious diseases. Some transplant experts, however, have expressed opposition to the proposal, saying it is too broad and could reduce the number of available organ donors, as well as the number of potential recipients ready to accept organs that are labeled as “risky” under the new guidelines.
